Preserving our history. Sustaining our culture. Protecting the freedom to learn.
ASALH South Florida, Inc. is the South Florida branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the organization Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded in 1915. For more than a century, ASALH has worked to ensure that the history of African Americans, the Caribbean, and the African Diaspora is collected, studied, and shared, not erased.
ASALH South Florida, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 81-3227166). Your gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and you will receive a written acknowledgment for your records.
Why Your Support Matters Now
Florida’s cultural landscape is changing quickly. A new state law bars cities and counties from funding offices or grants tied to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Beginning January 1, 2027, many local cultural organizations, including Black and Caribbean museums, arts groups, and community programs, will no longer be eligible for the county grants that have sustained them. Some long-standing programs have already been canceled, and community voices have been shut out of spaces built for them.
When public support disappears, history does not stop being important. It becomes the community’s responsibility to protect it.
Your gift to ASALH South Florida helps us:
- Correct the miseducation. We support research, publications, and public programs grounded in primary and secondary sources, so that our communities learn African American history accurately and completely.
- Bridge the university and the community. We bring scholars, authors, educators, and lay historians together in libraries, schools, and community spaces across Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade.
- Invest in young people. Our Youth Enrichment and Higher Education Scholarship programs prepare the next generation of historians, educators, and community leaders.
- Celebrate our heritage. Our African American History Month programs, Founder’s Day events, and the South Florida Black Film Festival keep our stories visible and alive.
- Leave a legacy. Every gift strengthens a local institution that will serve members, students, academics, and lay historians for generations to come.
Introducing The Woodson Fund
In response to the loss of public funding for cultural work in our region, ASALH South Florida has established The Woodson Fund.
Named for Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the Father of Black History, the Woodson Fund will support our branch’s ongoing effort to provide cultural programming in our region, as well as to provide support to South Florida cultural and educational institutions whose programs preserve and share the history and culture of African-descended peoples and who are losing funding under Florida’s new law. Grants will be awarded according to written, objective criteria approved by our Executive Council.
Dr. Woodson built a movement on community support when institutions would not support Black history. The Woodson Fund continues that tradition. Gifts of every size, from $25 to $2,500 and beyond, help keep the doors open, the programs running, and the stories told.
