Events

Founder’s Day was a success beyond what we could have imagined. The space was standing room only, with between 90 and 100 attendees. Dr. Hobson delivered a powerful and timely message, as did Senator Osgood in her acceptance speech.

Beyond that, we raised nearly $500 in contributions through Eventbrite and 4 new members so far, and counting.

There were several elected officials in attendance: Broward Commissioner Hazel Rogers, Broward County School Board Member Jeff Holness, City of Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Pamela Beasley-Pittman, and City of Oakland Park Commissioner Letitia Newbold.

Thanks to everyone who had a hand in making this happen. Sheryl Dickey, for the use of the Midtown Commerce Center and for delivering the invocation. Kisha King for doing such a wonderful job as our mistress of ceremonies. Woody Clermont for introducing our speaker. Dr. Joan Cartwright for facilitating all the payments and reconfiguring our membership payment page. Ramona LaRoche for serving as our greeting last evening.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tameka Hobbs, President, ASALH South Florida Inc.

Hello from Dr. Kitty Oliver,

Over the next few weeks, I will be presenting a number of Race and Change programs around Florida. Talking about race and ethnic relations in the U.S. in a hopeful way is a daunting task, for sure, but I am continually inspired by the wide range of people who are willing to at least attempt to engage in a deeper level of communication.

This is truly an inclusive conversation for those who are ready, and in need of inspiration.  I invite you to attend one if you’re in the area. For Example:

A new branch of the venerable Association for the Study of African American Life and History has formed in South Florida and members are committed to exploring the complexities of race in America and strategies for combatting racism and discrimination not just in theory but also on a person-to-person level. ASALH WEBSITE
